Digital China Initiative
The Digital China Initiative, established at the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies in the mid 2010s, develops and disseminates new research tools and methods, convenes experts, trains students and faculty, and coordinates existing activities in digital Chinese scholarship across all of Harvard’s Schools. The project is led by historians Peter K. Bol, Charles H. Carswell Professor of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, and Michael A. Szonyi, Frank Wen-Hsiung Wu Professor of Chinese History and Director of the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies. Working with colleagues in China and at other Chinese studies centers around the world, the initiative aims to develop the next generation of digital tools for work in all fields of Chinese studies, train a new generation of innovators in methods of digital scholarship, and expand research on China’s complex and evolving contemporary digital culture.
Ongoing Work
An ongoing project of the Digital China Initiative, the DCI Newspaper Database offers searchable access to digitized Chinese newspaper archives, supporting research in modern Chinese history. Please note that access is currently limited to users within the Harvard community and requires administrative approval.
