Professor Richard Jean So from McGill University will be giving a presentation on “Race and Distant Reading” from his current book project The Data of Cultural Inequality: American Codes of Race and Writing, 1950-2000. So’s first book, Transpacific Community: America, China, and the Rise and Fall of a Cultural Network (Columbia UP, 2016) was a finalist for the Modernist Studies Association’s First Book Prize. His most recent articles have appeared in journals including PMLA, American Literary History, MLQ, and Critical Inquiry, in addition to the Guardian, LARB, New Republic, and Atlantic Monthly.
