Dr. Kosuke Imai, Professor of Government and Statistics at Harvard University, will present “Using Algorithms to Detect Gerrymandering and Improve Legislative Redistricting: Cases from the United States and Japan.” Professor Imai will discuss the Algorithm-Assisted Redistricting Methodology (ALARM) Project, which conducts research into redistricting sampling algorithms, best practices and workflows for redistricting analysis, and tools to visualize, explore, and understand redistricting plans. ALARM Project researchers have developed redist, an open-source R package for redistricting simulation and analysis which implements state-of-the-art MCMC and SMC redistricting sampling algorithms. The discussion will be moderated by Katherine Matsuura, Japan Digital Scholarship Librarian at the Harvard University Japan Digital Research Center.
